Project Tour & Presentation
Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE)

TEP is installing 10 new, fast-starting, natural gas-fired generating engines at the H. Wilson Sundt Generating Station. The RICE Project will replace two of the older steam generating units; cutting down on air emissions and water consumption.

The RICE (Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines) units will generate clean, affordable and responsive power through an internal combustion process similar to a car engine.  The RICE Project is part of TEP's expansion of renewable energy resources. This project will advance TEP’s goal to provide 30 percent of its energy from renewable resources by 2030.

When completed, the facility will be one of the largest such plants in the United States. The fast-starting engines will generate power quickly, helping to compensate for intermittent output from wind and solar resources.

Speaker Bio: Conrad Spencer

Conrad graduated from the University of Utah in Electrical Engineering, and has worked in the Power Generation business for nearly 40 years. He has managed large Coal fired power plants and natural gas fired power plants.
